What is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a small “cap” that fits over a weak, decayed, or damaged tooth. When placed, it stops harmful bacteria from reaching the treatment site and evens out your bite force. This effect stems from the dental crown’s material, which can be porcelain, EMAX, or even zirconia.

Given how they work, dental crowns are most suited for patients with one (or more) of the following issues:

  • Large fillings that are failing
  • An extensive fracture in a tooth
  • A tooth treated with root canal therapy
  • A cosmetically imperfect tooth
  • An existing but damaged crown
  • Bite problems that need correction

The Dental Crown Process

In general, the dental crown process only takes about two dental visits. While the first visit prepares the patient’s tooth for restoration, the second one places the final crown when it’s ready.

The initial “prep” visit involves multiple related steps. As it starts, we’ll numb your mouth so our work doesn’t cause you any pain. Our next step will be to remove any old fillings or decay before rebuilding the missing structure with a “core buildup.” We’ll then trim your tooth to make room for the final crown and make an impression of it. That way, lab workers can use said impression to make your crown in 2-3 weeks; you’ll wear a temporary one in the meantime.

Our dentists will place your final dental crown on the second visit. At that time, treatment should go smoothly – we just need to confirm your crown matches your teeth well. We’ll then cement your restoration, give it a final polish, and send you on your way!

The Benefits of Getting a Dental Crown

Even if you think it’s needless, a dental crown has many benefits. The most common of these are:

  • A Beautiful Smile – Our office’s dental crowns use tooth-colored materials, so they’ll blend seamlessly with your smile! Friends and family alike won’t even notice you have any.
  • More Tooth Protection – Once placed, a dental crown protects your tooth from microbes and withstands your bite. That means it helps you avoid a root canal or tooth extraction later.
  • Versatile Treatment – Since they cover the whole tops of teeth, dental crowns can treat issues like cavities, chipped teeth, cracks and more.
  • Long-Lasting Results – While the average dental crown lasts 5-15 years, well-maintained ones have lifespans that can reach 30 years or more!
